Objectified – 2023 Ongoing Series (NSFW)

I created the Objectified photo series to feature a few brave Asian men and their stories about living in the Western world. In order to be in this series, each participant had to agree to be photographed in the nude with no exception. Why? Because each Asian man in the Western world faces a wall of challenges and stereotypes: “meek,” “nerd,” “unmasculine,” “small dick,” “romantically undesirable.” In the Western world, the default masculinity standard has been set by men of European heritage who were leveraging centuries of cultural and historical white supremacy. And the Objectified project shows how objectification can be empowering if we are in control of our own imagery. The men in Objectified are redefining what masculinity means on their own terms, and my goal is simply to be present and capture the results. If I have a credo, I would say we have to dismantle this traditional notion of masculinity that the dark corners of the “manosphere” and Western culture in general feed us, in order to embrace a new and much-improved masculinity centered on confidence and vulnerability. The world can stand to benefit greatly from this shift, and I know I already have.
